I guess nobody expects to find a rattlesnake in their yard but there was. this was high desert. and I thought it was cool enough that he wasn’t going to strike me since he was so quiet. So I took a shot and ran fast.

You’ve got good details in the snake, David and it’s not looking at you, so it seems that it didn’t see you as a threat.

I chuckled when you said “you don’t expect to see a rattlesnake in your yard…” Depends on the “yard” I guess.hen I had a house out in Central Oregon, we did snake checks twice a year in the spring/early summer. They liked to nest and hibernate in a jumbled basalt retaining wall off the patio that, at the time we built, seemed like a cheap and natural solution to the slope. Of course, all those crevices meant the we, the dog, and any guests staying with us were regularly startled out of our seats, spilling morning coffee when moving a chair and hearing a rattle once the sun warmed enough.
I developed an eradication plan involving leather snake gaiters, a telescoping window washing handle, over-the-ear sound protection, and a .38 with birdshot. After a few years, they nested elsewhere on the 5 acre property, and we didn’t bother them because they do help with the mice and sage rats, but I still checked right up to the year I sold the house.
The first time I saw one off the patio, I was photographing cactus flowers, trying to get the dof perfect to get the flower fully in focus and the background nice and soft, and I saw snake texture through my macro lens. I stopped stopping down and started running off. It was 38"!
