Red Baron

Sony A100

My office manager is a big fan of dragonflys and she has a number of my images in her office. I told her about this Red Veined Darter that I shot in our garden many years ago. I posted it on the old site in 2007 but could only find the small 720 pixel jpeg and couldn’t find the original RAW file. At the time I was not using Lightroom and had no keywords to help my search. I pretty much gave up but today when I was scrounging on an old hard drive using Bridge I found the original. Kind of like the prodigal son coming home. Anyway, I was so pleased that I found it that I couldn’t resist posting it now. We do have a lot of dragonflys around our garden but most of them are blue dashers. I’ve never seen one of these guys since that lone encounter. It also made me wonder how many tens of thousands of shots I’ve taken with my 200mm macro which I bought in 2001 and is still going strong. All comments welcome. >=))>

Dang, that’s sharp! I love the color and simple green background. Fantastic image.

Bill, what a treat this is. I also love dragonflies, and really enjoy trying to photograph them. I have never seen a red one before, so this is extra special. So glad you found the RAW file. The colors and details are superb. Thank you for posting again, as I wasn’t with NPN back then, so missed seeing this one.

Hi Bill,

You have been holding out on us–glad you found this one. Colors and pose are fantastic. I’m good with either one, but like the first one because of the eye detail. Awesome…Jim

Bill, this is an amazingly red dragonfly, wow! The eyes and separation from the background are best in the first post, but the details and touch of extra darkness in the df stand out in V2.

Enjoyable and fascinating shot Bill. Loving the fine detail and colors. Nice catch!

Hi Bill, the details and colors are spectacular. A dragon I have never seen - thanks for posting this and bringing it so much to life.
