Red Dahlia (Kenora Wildfire)

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The killing frost arrived this week and our garden is finished for the year. So no more garden flower shots for this year. I used a 60 image stack to get all of this vibrant, red dahlia in focus. I also used diffused natural light to preserve the natural color of this flower. This shot was taken in the studio.

Specific Feedback

This was a very clean stack and apparently black BG’s fare better in stacking than light or high key BG’s. How do you like the lighting which I feel produced some nice soft shadows and brighter areas.

Technical Details

z9 60mm f2.8 micro 60 image stack (PMax), Levels, Black point adjusted, Brightness & Contrast.

Very nice lighting and color, Jim, though for some reason my eye would prefer the light coming from the upper right and I have no idea why that is. Maybe a touch more room on top? A beautiful flower and the lighting shows your usual fine touch.

Jim: I like the lighting a lot. It was the first thing that struck me when I opened the image. The flower itself is striking so is a very fitting exclamation point to your season. I also think the inclusion of the leaf is a very nice touch. Superbly crafted image. >=))>

Beautiful light, colors and shadows. I’d remove that small pale patch on the petal in the center near the top - but that’s probably just me. We got hit with the first frost in Korea too; two weeks early this year.

Wow! This is a bold image. The lighting is beautiful. I cannot imagine the effort a 60 image stack would take. I like the leaf at the bottom.

I read with envy your “killing frost”. It’s so hot for here and the storm season is well and truly underway.

Bold is right! This is just such a splash of color and form - your lighting almost makes it three dimensional. Soft and spiky a the same time. Fabulous.
