Reddish Egret Hunting

Photographed at Ding Darling. Manually exposed for the bird - as expected, the water is overexposed

Interesting that this heron often hunts with its wings open. For balance? better sighting of its prey ?

Specific Feedback Requested

Would like opinions on how to manage that water - I have toned this a fair bit

Any other views welcome

Great image. I might add some at the bottom so to not cut off the reflection. According to Wikipedia, “it uses its wings like an umbrella, creating shade that attracts fish”.

Yup, that’s exactly what they do - cut the glare with their wings. Such a wonderful portrait of this behavior. I like the tip of the beak in the water. Just exceptional. Colors look natural. Maybe a touch of texture in the bird itself? Either way, it’s a terrific image.

Wonderful! I love the pose and action, and the reflection is great! I think the light water sets off the bird nicely. If you wanted to experiment, you could probably get a careful selection of the bird and use it as a mask to darken/saturate the water, but that would obscure the lovely shape of the wings. It would be nice to see more of the reflection if you have it.

Thank you - fortunately I have the space for the full reflection

Thank you - I did try adding some more contrast to the midtowns and that helped too

Thanks - I have some real estate at the bottom - thanks for the feedback Ronald

A really nice angle that shows off the wing shape very well, Karl. A beautiful job on the exposure and detail in the bird. The cut off reflection doesn’t bother me.

Thanks Dennis - I haven’t been on NPN for sometime - work - nice mysterious headless hawk !

Lovely image. Really nice pose and reflection. Water looks fine to me. A bit more on bottom may add a bit to an already very good looking photo.

Very nice behavioral image with good detail, color, and composition. I’m okay with the reflection as is.

Thanks @David_Schoen and @David_Leroy - I do have that real estate at the bottom - helps some
