We spent 3 days in Northern Minnesota photographing loons on 4 different lakes. Each held it’s challenges. On this day the light was dull, the wind up a bit and the waves as well. One moment the loon was in the viewfinder the next it was the sky then only water! Challenging but worth it.

Sounds like a loony excursion, John. A nice image of the adult and it’s always cool when they have a youngster on their back. This shows how large these birds are. Even at f/13 the chick is pretty soft. Since you were only at iso 1000, you probably could have gone a stop or two further, but I’m not sure it would have done much to get the chick in focus.
Hi John, I do a fair amount of bird shooting from boats as well. Very challenging to get them sharp on a bobbing boat or even keep them in the viewfinder as you mention. I think the softness is due more to a slower shutter speed than the f stop. In any event, a nice capture telling the story of these two.
