River Birch Tree Coming Unglued!

Image(s)

Image Description

We were in Mystic, CT visiting. Returning to our hotel I noticed 3 trees in a row with multiple layers of bark peeling, curling, shedding with lots of lichen and fungi in , on and amongst the peeling bark. The intact bark appeared to be a birch, but unlike the birch trees of New England that I’ve seen. Upon further research, I am rather certain, though not 100% so, that it is a River Birch because of the orange and gold hues of color on the underside of the bark. I have always found bark to be uniquely intriguing, each tree has it’s own personality. I have found many mini-ecosystems thriving in the fissures and cracks of both alive and dead trees. So many tiny fungi and lichen, barely perceptible to the eye, all growing together peacefully. Nature amazes and amuses me constantly!!

Pertinent Technical Details

This was taken with my iPhone 13 Pro Max triple lens in Macro mode approx 6-8 inches from the tree. Minor editing in LR.

Lori: What a great find and a delight for any color junkie. The disparate textures are a real plus. Phones are becoming so competent and I have to constantly remind myself that I have a pretty good camera on me at all times. Very nicely done. >=))>

I love the textures and color in this, Lori. You did a very nice job isolating a section of bark with just the right amount of variation in texture and color. I especially like the directionality of it, with a subtle V at the top mirrored with a less subtle upside down V from below. Nicely seen and captured.

Lori, you have an amazing collection of textures, shapes and colors here with the greens in the lichen contrasting well with the orange on the left.
