About This Image

This is an image that I dug up from my image archive where it sat, unprocessed and unseen for almost 10 years. I shot it in October 2017 in a remote valley in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and only processed it in the past few days.

What mood or atmosphere comes through most strongly?

Do you notice any technical issues that affect the image, such as sharpness, depth of field, exposure, or processing artifacts?

Technical Details

Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Lens: TS-E45mm f/2.8
Focal length: 45mm
Shutter speed: 30s
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 100

Tripod/handheld: Tripod
Focus method: Manual Focus
Filters: 2 stop ND grad (soft)
Technique: this is a merge of 2 images. Since I used a prime lens I was not able to get the framing I wanted so I shot two images - one for the sky and the other for the foreground and blended them together so that the river at the bottom was not so close to the edge of the frame.
Conditions: A beautiful autumn evening.

Tom: What a beautiful scene superbly rendered. Your effort with the filter brings back so many memories for me regarding how to tame dynamic range. Now it’s so easy with HDR. I honestly can’t remember when I last used a GND even though I still have a full complement of them hiding somewhere in my camera bag.

I really love the light on the mountains and the shine of the stream reflecting the blue sky. That strip of blue appeals to me, especially since it leads to the mountain with the most interesting details. This kind of image makes me want to go there. Nicely done. >=))>

Hi Tom,
Well, I for one am glad that you decided to let this lovely grand landscape see the light of day. The warm glow of light on the peaks is quite beautiful and contrasts nicely with the blue tones of the river snaking it’s way toward the mountains. The exposure, sharpness, etc. all look just fine to me. Beautifully done!

Lovely!! I’m glad this one finally found the light of day! I love the colors and the cool blues of the shaded area at the base of the mountain. Some could suggest toning it down but I find it striking, especially as it picks up the blue of the river. Its contrast with the warm light on the peaks and in the sky is so nice. There is a lot of editing leeway in that shaded blue area and in the sky, and it would be tempting to play with it, but I assume you have done that and landed here, and I have no objection to this version. One small idea would be to darken the river just a bit as it exits the frame on the left, to help keep wandering eyes in the image.

Wow! A great photo. I love the last light on the mountains as the river falls into shadows and how the River meanders to the base of the mountains. To me it says it is a gentle ending to a great day in absolutely beautiful country.

Fascinating color in the river. Is that glacial run off?

This was definitely worth digging out, and is a beautiful grand scene. The light on the hills makes it special, and gives a feeling of the peace that comes at the beginning or ending of the day.

I could see it sharpened a tad more, but really just being nit picky and looking for something to suggest.

Hi Tom,

Beautiful landscape! MAJESTIC comes to mind - but I’m not sure that’s a mood or atmosphere… “A River Runs Through It” ( I think a movie?) comes to my mind as well.

Blend looks great and I don’t see any technical issues . Beautifully seen and captured. Glad you found this one!

Thank you for your comments @Bill_Fach , @Ed_Lowe , @Diane_Miller , @timothy3 , @John_Williams and @Lon_Overacker !

Bill, I still use my ND Grads every now and then though I’ll admit I now use them less and less. I carry my filter pouch in my bag all of the time. It’s fairly heavy - 1.5 pounds so I sometimes wonder whether it’s even worth lugging around.

Tom, the scene is GRAND. I’m most strongly struck by is the color contrast between the mountains and the blue river. The river is a great leading line up to the main peaks and the sky. Your blending looks excellent. There may be a tiny bit of haloing along the left tree lined ridge.

Hi Tom, it is a beautiful image. The composition is excellent. You may consider brightening the foreground a little bit. The colour of water may be moved towards that of sky.
