Rock Pigeon

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

If you’ve spent much time on the Oregon Coast, you may have encountered Mo’s Restaurant. The black background is under the dock supporting Mo’s in Florence. The pigeons seem to like hanging out under the dock. Though common and somewhat of an urban nuisance they can be rather attractive.

Specific Feedback

Any thoughts appreciated.

Wow what awesome detail and color! Love seeing that orange eye so prominently and natural looking. At first glance, I thought this must be a flash shot but I don’t see signs of that on the bird. Actually, I think I can see part of the pier reflected back in the eye. Wish the feet were visible and not obstructed by the green plank. Nice image!

this is a great shot of this rock pigeon. Usually, when we see a black background, it almost always has done with a flash, but there’s no evidence of a flash here and that’s what’s so cool about this picture. It’s so natural. Definitely an unusual location for a bird. But I really like the colors and textures that you’ve brought out. Well done!

Thanks for commenting, @Allen_Sparks and @David_Schoen . No flash. This was taken shortly before sunset with the light coming in over the river and hitting the pigeon. I, too, was not happy to see (or not see) the missing feet.

Allen, I think Rock pigeons are extremely undervalued. Gorgeous and clever, just in wrong places through no fault of their own.

The details are lovely on the bird and he’s given you a classic pose. My immediate thought would be to crop to make this into an arty, darkish head and shoulder portrait?

Excellent job, Allan. Beautiful detail and it really pops from the black background. Did you get the Snowy Owl in Florence? Someone in my camera club was down there and just sent me some images she got.

No, Dennis. Haven’t down that way recently. A friend of mine did send me a photo as well. Did see one in Albany several years ago.
