Rock Sandpiper

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I’m posting this more for interest, as it’s an uncommon visitor to the lower 48, occasionally seen along the coasts of Oregon and Washington. This was taken around Port Townsend, Washington. The sandpiper was in a large group of Dunlin and Black-bellied Plovers on the lawn just above the water. Fortunately I was with my brother-in-law, who is an expert birder; otherwise I probably wouldn’t have picked this guy out of the large flock.

Specific Feedback

Any thoughts appreciated. The image is heavily cropped as we didn’t want to get too close and disturb the flock.

Technical Details

Canon R5; 100-500 at 500 mm; 1/1000 at f10; ISO 5000.

A good record shot of this unusual visitor, Allen. More than adequate for an ebird record.

Wonderful post Allen, don’t have a Rock sandpiper on my list. You’ve got a great stepping shot through the dewy grasses.

Yes, occasionally we do see other unusual birds along with the fall migration in the Pacific Northwest. I’m certainly accustomed to seeing plovers, sandpipers, and other similar birds. This is a nice image and I like that action pose.
