Ruby-throated hummingbird hitting bee balm 2

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Another image of bee balm in my hummingbird set up. This time with a purple flower. Attracted by sugar water.

Specific Feedback

I tried to keep the saturation on the flower and leaves under control to maintain a realistic look and not to compete with the hummingbird. I added an additional round of saturation on the bird.

Brightness has been an issue for me in the past on these set up shots which has been easy to correct in post processing. How does brightness look in this image? Going for a realistic look with enough pop in the bird.

Technical Details

Canon R7, 400mm f4 DO IS II, tripod, five speedlites @1/8 power, printed BG of oof vegetation
ISO 200, f20, 1/250s

Well done. Doesn’t look flashed. Excellent color and detail. I have only had the opportunity to try this 2 or3 times and I know how difficult it is to get the perfect settings and flash arrangement. I’ve photos in NPN where people seem to know what they are doing.

It looks great to me Allen. You did a nice job controlling the bright reds of the flowers while really making the hummingbird pop. I love the idea of a preprinted BG. I was going to say what a beautiful bokeh you have for the BG.

Nice, Allen. The leaves look much better than on the previous post. The whole image looks like it has much more depth. Gorgeous detail in the hummingbird’s plumage.
