Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Took this shot of a male last summer. Used a speedlite (high speed sync) on camera. Background is my neighbor’s lawn. Dipped the salvia in sugar water.
Looking forward to their return.

Hi Allen: Technically the details in the hummer and flower look really nice. Exposure seems spot on. I think I’d look at a slight dodge around the eye to help it stand out more. While the grass provided a natural green, I’m not a big fan of completely flat colored backgrounds. They just don’t seem to feel right. I’m a hummingbird junkie and can’t wait to get them back here for the summer to begin photographing them again.

The gorget looks fantastic. IQ on the bird is top notch. I haven’t calibrated recently, but the image looks dark (if it’s my monitor, just ignore that). I like the salvia a lot, but I do wish it was closer to full bloom. I’d agree with Keith that a less uniform BG could’ve improved the image a bit. I still don’t have any decent shots of a male ruby throat, so I wish this were mine.
