Rude Gesture

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

A third image in the “whimsical” vein, this is ice encrusted vegetation on the edge of Multnomah Falls from when we had deep cold in January. I don’t know what the ice was covering, but it made for some interesting shapes. I don’t often use the bokeh effect in photographs, but in this one I thought it looked better than with everything in focus.

Specific Feedback

Again, this is a step away from what I normally chase in photography and any feedback is appreciated.

Hah!! Nature expressing its opinion of us! It knows how transitory we are and will be happy to get rid of us.

I like that the BG features are softer. The high key look emphasizes the cold!

John,
When I read the title I just had to chuckle; maybe that’s what nature thinks of us humans. This may be whimsical, but it works for me. Keep them coming.

Interesting, to be sure. Ice has a lot to say here.

John, I love the shapes and textures in this sculpture. Nice job with the DOF. It makes me think of the Hobbit for some reason.

Wow! That’s my first response to seeing this incredible shape (a shrub or tree, I guess).

Your composition really does it justice, though even more blur in the background would have even isolated the figure more effectively. In such cases I tend to use a quite wide aperture (3.5, 4 or 5.6) and stack two or three images to get the figure sharp where it matters while keeping the background as vague as possible. Don’t know whether the Z7 can do this in-camera as fast as my OM-1 can. I also almost always use a tripod, but you might have been cross-country skiing here, and then I would also not have brought one…

Alternatively, you might have moved to the left a bit to get rid of the background altogether (although new ‘problems’ might pop up to the right of course…). The great thing about snow (which we rarely get here anymore :disappointed_relieved: ) is that tends to be much easier to isolate subjects.

But it’s still a wow-image to me. Love it!!

Thank you all for your feedback! @Ed_Williams , I hadn’t thought of the Hobbit; interesting thought.

@gerard, thanks for your thoughts! I didn’t think of focus stacking a wider aperture; I’ll keep that in mind for the future! The z7ii will take a stack of variably focused images, but unfortunately doesn’t combine them in camera. Have you been happy with how the OM-1 does that?

Yes, my OM-1 really shines in this respect, both in speed and quality.
Of course I use focus stacking mainly for macro work, but I actually like the composite jpeg the camera software produces better than when I stack the raw files myself with Photoshop. Other, more specialised software might do an even better job, but I’m happy with the jpegs for now.

That’s a great shot and yes the gesture is pretty obvious. Looks very very cold.
