Sage and Stone

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is a closer, follow up to my previous posting of the rocks and grass and sage in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone a couple weeks ago. I loved these big rocks scattered through out the sage in the rolling hills, with the cloudy sky in the BG.

Specific Feedback

It somehow feels like it may need a slight counterclockwise rotation, but this is how it came out in several shots. As with my previous shot, I’m wondering about the crop. Maybe a bit of sage off the bottom and a bit of the clouds off the top? That leaves the stones even huge-er(?) in the frame though.

Technical Details

Canon 5DMiii, f16, 1/160 sec, iso 100, -1 EV, 50 mm. Bean bag.

These rocks have a real presence. I find this image meaningful. I thought of experimenting with b&w because the colors aren’t that strong. See what you think. There’s a rock on the right edge I would clone out. Otherwise the composition looks good to me.

I really like the textures of the shrubs and of those three rocks. And that sky really compliments the scene. In terms of composition, I’m a bit uneasy about the rocks in the middle being so close to the big rock on the right. Maybe moving one step to the left would have resulted in a bit more separation between those two elements.

Thank you @Igor_Doncov. I don’t think of doing B&W nearly enough. I really like the textures the B&W brings out in this one. I’ll rework that rock, now that you mention it. Little details make a world of difference don’t they?

Thank you @Tom_Nevesely, I see what you mean about the rocks being clumped together. I’ll take a look at the other shots I took of this area and see if I got one with better separation on these rocks.

Ed,
I think your crop works just fine on this scene and I am loving those clouds. I find myself wishing that you had stood a little more to the left so that those two rock formations did not merge. I do like the B&W version very much the @Igor_Doncov posted. Nicely done!

Thank you @Ed_Lowe. It is good to see how to rethink this type of setting in the future.
