The Moors of Lamar

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was struck by the greens and the clouds and the rocks and the sage as you enter the lower Lamar Valley in Yellowstone NP.

Specific Feedback

Not sure about the crop in this, I’m wondering if I should go with more of a pano look and take out some of the sage and the rock on the bottom? Any suggestions or comments are welcomed and appreciated.

Technical Details

Canon 5DMiii, f16, 1/100 sec, iso 100, -1 EV, 47 mm (24-105 lens).

Ed,
I like this as is, but I like a pano slightly more FWIW. Something like this.

The greens are quite nice as are those wonderful looking clouds. I don’t think you could go wrong with either option. Nicely done.

The pano for sure, fits the viewer right into a great location. Interesting light spread across the shallow slopes almost too uniform. Might try brushing or masking in some shadows and soften the grass in the FG by the rocks. Nice look at the land, Ed.

I also really like this image but I also really like Ed’s suggested pano crop. Though it’s too late now, another thing you could have tried (or can try next time) would be to shoot from a lower perspective. That way you could reduce the size of the emptier green areas and move the background hill, the midground rocks and the foreground closer together visually.

Thank you @Ed_Lowe, I really like your pano crop on this. Thank you @Stephen_Stanton, I will try to experiment with brushing in some shadows, I’ve not done that before, but it makes a lot of sense for this one. @Tom_Nevesely, thanks for the suggestions, I took several shots of this area from the roadway. I should have gone down the bank a bit and tried a different perspective on this one. Great suggestions on both this one and the next. A simple position adjustment can often make a world of difference for a better perspective.
