Sandhill crane - pan/blur reflection

Just returned from a week at Bosque Del Apache NWR co-leading a workshop. It’s always fun and challenging to get a nice pan/blur of the cranes at liftoff in good light.

Great feeling love the shot

This is a wow! shot. It truly gives a sense of the motion and grace of this magnificent bird as well as the stillness and calm in the water below. The eye is also sharp enough to add to the story here.

Excellent capture here, Keith. The wing extension almost touching the water and overall reflection is perfect… :+1:

Wow! Perfect positioning and excellent panning – what’s going on in the reflection of the primaries is wonderful!!

We sometimes get a couple of Sandhill Cranes in Korea, and I just love to see them. To get an in-flight reflection like this takes some expertise! It’s a beautiful image, Keith.

Hi Keith,
You certainly met the challenge with skill in this shot.
Love the motion blur on the wings while nice and sharp on the head and feet.
It’s beautiful.

Do you like using DXO Raw?
It looks like the software done a good job at removing the noise in this image.
Thanks, Keith

Great shot!

Yes, I like DXO Pure RAW very much. It works flawlessly for my images. It is very fast on my Apple Silicon based Mac. I personally would not be without it.

Beautiful image, Keith! I love the full extension of the wings and how close the tips are to the waters surface. Well done panning this shot. SO difficult but you pulled this off nicely!
Quick question…How long are the birds there is Bosque? I’ve never been and probably wouldn’t be able to go until early January.

Thank you, Keith
I appreciate the response.
My biggest issue is noise on shots where I can’t control the light.
It looks like it’s worth the investment so I think I’ll give it a try.

Thanks again, Keith

The birds will still be there in early January. Bird populations are fair, not great, but still more than enough to stay entertained.

Weather dictates when the migration north will happen again, but usually not before Feb.

Showing you skills very well, this image. Great job with those mm’s and 1/125s - the mood created is very appealing. The soft ones and the full reflection make it a truly fine image. Love it! Hans

Superb composition. Using the right shutter speed to balance the degree of detail and blur takes a lot of skill. Everything came together nicely. The setting is superb.
