Scratching Post + Alternative

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Botswana
This young cub was intently watching his 2 playmates as he vigorously scratched on his natural scratching "post, " in wonderful golden light.
I’m often reminded that the big cats are just big housecats in many ways.

I love how the golden light illuminated the cub’s body, casting a warm glow that highlighted its features beautifully, and the curious look is too intriguing.
The image is good as presented and I understand why you included the ‘natural scratching post’ for showing his behaviour, but I am also thinking whether a portrait orientation would enhance this image. It might draw more attention to the cub and its curious expression.

Great capture of the little one. I agree with @sandipan about the light. My preference is for the first image, which shows the cub with the scratching post. The darker parts of the tree near the bottom right corner acts as a leading line from dark to the light of the cub. Upon leaving the animal’s eyes and moving around the image I think that the claws on the right hind foot give a nice indication of the role they will play as the cub grows. Well done.
I find that sometimes a close crop or portrait may look intentional as it slightly distorts the animals features.
