Sedona, AZ after a rare snowstorm

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is also from the Arizona Highways instructional photo tour from February, 2009. We lucked out although the locals weren’t too happy. There was about 18-inches of snow on the peaks that day. This was shot from Airport Road which we were led to by our instructor. I believe our instructor was Chuck Lawson but it’s been 17 years.

Specific Feedback

Due to the participant crowds and the drop off, I couldn’t really avoid the tree on the left. I left most of it in but I did remove some fence posts on the right. Chain link is still there. I was lucky no one wandered into the frame. Any suggestions are welcome. Addendum: I just checked online and the trees that were in the frame on the left are no longer there. Maybe we should go back and try again after the next snowstorm.

Technical Details

Canon 5D Mark II, EF 24-105 @ 70mm, f/22 @ 1/125, ISO 200, 7-image stitch, tripod-mounted.

I like your processing in this one, Fred. Great colors. You captured some great light sweeping across the landscape. The left branches don’t bother me. They’re somewhat balanced by the tree on the right. I would probably clone out the diagonal branch right in the ULC. It’s a little bit of an eye catcher. I wish for a little more FG. It seems a little cut off. Just mypersonal opinion of course.

@Michael_Lowe Thank you again. As always, I do appreciate your comments. I have already fiddled with the branches a bit. I’ll see what I can do about the larger one. As for the foreground, I had to stay behind a chainlink fence with barbed wire atop it. I wish it had been possible to include more of the city below. I shot at a focal length of 70mm to preclude the fence and the shrubs that blocked the lower areas from view. I am surprised that I did not include more of them along the edge of the frame but (sigh) we didn’t have any of the current wonderful AI retouching tools in 2009.
