Shooting the Moon

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

For fun I chose this desert scene with the early night moon as it relates to the previous image I submitted in B&W for last week’s challenge. I wasn’t quite dark, obviously, but the excitement in witnessing this scene of Six Shooter Peak in Canyonlands was expressed by a friend who exclaimed, “Look! Six Shooter is shooting the Moon!”. Hence, it’s name.

Specific Feedback

I did a lot of dodging and burning to bring out the highlights of the desert cliffs. Is it too much?

Connie, what excellent timing to get the butte pointing towards the moon with good details in the land. The moon’s “tail” is a fun touch. What a convenient cloud. The yellow in the moon tells me that you’ve reduced the moon’s brightness considerably. Since the human eye/brain combination give us an amazing ability to see high brightness, this would likely look more “realistic” if you have taken two exposures (moon, land) and combined them. Since the full moon’s brightness is not adjustable, getting both moon and land reasonably exposed in a single shot is all about the timing relative to sunrise/sunset.
