I was hiking down a trail in Washington State when I spotted this grouping of wild mushrooms on the forest floor. I don’t recall seeing a collection of fungi this impressive either before or since that day. I got down low, set up my tripod and camera, and got this image. To this day it remains one of my all time favorite small scenes in nature.

I am just wondering if it is a little too tight on the right side? Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for looking.

This is a wonderful image Ted! The “flow” of the mushrooms is lovely and the colour is amazing. I like the burning of the surrounding greenery.
For me, the mushies are just a little too bright. I like the composition, but think there could be another version with just a tad more room on the bottom…or remove the half mushroom. Just thinking out loud really.
Ted, this is truly an impressive collection of fungi…are they fit for human consumption ?
Your composition is excellent and I don’t see a need for more canvas space on the right . I might try toning down the subject a bit , which might make the overall scene look more natural . ,All in all , a beautiful image.
A wonderful find and capture! I always prefer a bit of elbow room but border patrol can indicate a close crop. The right is not noticeably tighter than the other sides so I’d say it’s artist’s choice. I do think @glennie has a point about the one cut off at the bottom (it looks easy to prune), and I think both she and @Jmill59 have a point about toning down the highlights just a bit. The saturation of the yellows looks fine. I love the dark BG and the overall flow of the composition.
Mushroom explosion. What a great find. Nicely captured. I agree with some of the others in that I would like to see more room at the bottom so the stem of the last one isn’t cut off, also maybe a tad more room on the right. I also agree that maybe the yellow is a touch too bright.
Thank you @Diane_Miller@Chris_Baird@Jmill59@glennie for all your comments. I went back and re-edited the photo, toning down the brightness and saturation of the mushrooms and removing the one mushroom at the bottom edge. Please l
Ted, I think you went a bit too far with the rework. The original saturation created a beautiful yellow, just the brightness could be toned down - your rework loses the attractive color. It will end up perfect, I’m sure. A great group!
The original post had better color, but the highlights seemed a bit to hot. Just back off the highlights and keep the saturation, or if you must don’t bring the saturation down that much. The composition is wonderful, and it is quite an impressive bloom.
Yes, now you’re getting there! I don’t know how you are altering the mushrooms but I think going back to the raw file and backing off the Highlights slider would be the first step. Then look at Shadows and WB…
The OP is actually looking better now, with maybe a slight cooling of WB being the answer.
Getting good! Did you have a look at tweaking the WB just a bit toward blue and the tiniest bit toward magenta? There is a bit of a yellow-green cast here that feels more than needed.
Ted: What an arresting scene. I can see how it stopped you in your tracks. I like your comp and arrangement of the mushrooms in the scene. Your last revision looks spot on to me. One thing you might consider when posting revisions is to insert them in the original post so that viewers can scroll easily from one image to the next. Top notch shot. >=))>
Thanks @Bill_Fach. I guess I still don’t know all the ins and outs of how the platform works. Could you let me know the proper way to post an edited image of the original one in that space? Much appreciated.
Ted: On your original post at the bottom you will see a pencil icon. That allows you to edit the post. What I usually do is go to the very top of the page and type in “Repost” or “rework” or “edited” or “updated”. Then choose the up arrow icon on the top of the page and upload the new image. It will appear above your original or if you prefer you could insert it directly below. One last step is to use the pencil icon near your title and add the words above so that it shows up in the title and alerts folks that you’ve made a change. Hope this helps and if you’re still not sure get back with me. >=))>
