Snapping turtle with duckweed

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I think snapping turtles are very photogenic. When they are bedecked with duckweed, the feast of textures becomes even more fun.

Specific Feedback

I’d appreciate feedback on any aspect of the picture, especially on the focus, highlights/shadows, and white balance.

Technical Details

Camera: Fuji X-T5
Lens: Fuji XF150-600mm/F5.6-8
Camera settings: 1/1600 sec, f/8, ISO 1600
Processing software: DxO Photolab, Topaz AI sharpening, Nik Color Efex, Photoshop

Excellent - the focus on the bedecked parts, especially the head and shoulders, makes this all the more amusing, like it’s been awarded a wreath for winning the Slow Race. The oof blurs front and back are just right to my eye. WB and Highlights/Shadows I also like - the green, though very bright, looks natural and festive to suit the occasion. I really like this overall.

Canan, this is a very well decorated snapper. I agree that everything looks good

Thank you, Mark

Thanks a lot for the details commentary, Mike

Canan, it’s a remarkable creature and you photographed it well. The colors are terrific.

Although it’s fine as is, I suggest that you consider cropping out areas that aren’t adding anything and also darkening the background and foreground a bit. I couldn’t think of how to explain that well so here’s quick version that shows generally what I mean.

Great shot! I love the textures and the colors. The duckweed adds a little whimsy to the story. Very nice.

Thank you very much, Don. I did darken the foreground and background in the original, but I guess it wasn’t enough. Thanks a lot for your suggestions

Thanks, Timothy!

Canan, I love that you are down eye level with this guy. Wonderful details in the subject, and the oof areas are actually helping keep my eye on the subject better. Nicely done!

Canan: Great POV and a fine comp and capture. I do like what @Don_Peters did but the original works fine for me. Your plane of focus getting the eye and some of the shell details sharp as well as your overall DOF management are spot on for me. A nice find and a fine image. >=))>
