Snowing in the Woods +V2

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

During a brief but heavy snow fall, I opened a window and took this snapshot. I was pleasantly surprised by how much falling snow there is, making this a somewhat abstract view.

Specific Feedback

I’ve burned-in that golden tree, but it still stands out strongly. I think that further darkening of that tree would increase the sense of abstraction.

V2 comes from taking my own suggestion…using a hue/saturation layer in PS.

Technical Details

R5, 180 macro, 1/30 s, f/11, iso 3200.

Hi @Mark_Seaver , What a wonderful image of this snow squall you have shared with us. I really like how the golden/brown tree glows among it’s grey peers, connecting nicely to the brown highlights throughout the scene and the dark branches provide dark pen strokes of accent. Your choice of shutter speed nails the streaking of falling snow really nicely. Well seen and processed.

I really need to head up the mountains and capture some snow; I love these images where the snowfall adds so much to the scene.

My first thought when opening this large was how wonderfully abstract that central portion was. Here’s the area I mean:

I prefer the initial version…

I prefer the first version as well. I would reduce the saturation of only the main tree. The colors in the leaf litter look good to me.

I had to take some time to appreciate the image. But after a while, viewing, the beauty appeared. Choice of shutter speed seems to be just right.
I prefer your first version.

Hi Mark,
You had to work really hard for this one! :grinning: All kidding aside this is a wonderful wintertime abstract. I was going to try something similar to this from my breezeway and got sidetracked and then it was to late. Version 2 works quite well, after taking care of that tree. I also like @John_Williams even more abstract rendition. Beautifully done!
