Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I usually photograph details, not large scenes, but in this case I liked the overall scene.

The compressed version has some banding in the sky that isn’t there in the uncompressed version.

Specific Feedback

All comments would be welcome. Although the scene had an emotional impact for me, that doesn’t mean it would do much for anyone else.

Technical Details

ISO 100, 17mm, f/4.0, .5 second.

I really like this: the isolated cactus, the way the landscape and the clouds almost form parallel diagonal lines, and the complementary orange and blue colors in the sky.

I might consider trying to enhance the orange color in the sky just a tiny bit and see how it looked - just thought.

It is beautiful, somehow looking at it is very relaxing.

Thanks for the comment, Elizabeth. You saw what there is to see. I’ll see if I can improve the color in the sky.

Just a thought … I’m not that experienced so I’d take it with a grain of salt

Very nicely framed, Don! I’m enjoying the colors as is. Not sure about bringing up more detail in the foreground shadows. I feel like I want to see more, but if you do that, you’re going to lose the graphic feel by introducing more detail.

Thanks, Bonnie. I debated how much to bring up the foreground detail and settled on “not much.”

This is a very quiet peaceful scene Don. The diagonals both in the clouds and the landscape do a very nice job of complimenting each other. The subtle light also works quite well in this image. I could see bringing up the orange just a tad in the sky, but that is just a personal preference. Very nicely done.

I love the way the light and lines funnel you to that saguaro Don. The cactus is so small in the image, by the composition gives it an outsize role that I really like.

I’m surprised there is that much posterization from the compression. Fortunately it is much harder to see in the smaller view.

Ed and John, thank you both.
