The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
This is a photo of a man walking on the beach in Carmel, California, while the sun is setting into the Pacific Ocean. There is also a little dog in the photo (lower right), that is not very visible. I initially processed this photo in color but am try to do more monochrome so I converted it. I like the way the light from the sun hits the ocean and the way the man is lined up with the light spots in the ocean and the sun.
Specific Feedback
Is the photo too dark? Too vague (does it inspire “solitude”) or any other emotion? The dog (at the bottom of the photo) is not very visible so I may try to bring up the light a bit around him. The ISO is pretty high (8000) and I’m not sure if that is an issue.

A very evocative photograph and aptly named. You did nail the composition with the sun glade perfectly behind the man. My only suggestion would be to try and clone out the out of focus foliage in the LLC. Everything else is spot on in my opinion.
It definitely evokes solitude, all the moreso because we cannot see the dog. I would not try to bring the dog out in the picture. To me, it’s a lone figure, setting sun, looking out at vast ocean. It could be reflective, melancholy, or peaceful. The black and white treatment brings a slightly more somber tone to it, but that could just be me.
I’ll let others share their thoughts on whether it’s too dark. I’m notoriously dark, or was until I turned down my screen brightness to compensate for it, which suddenly yielded better processing results.

I think this is a fine image, Richard and it definitely evokes a feeling of solitude in me, Richard. I would probably eliminate the “dog” entirely, though it’s not really identifiable. With the dog, it’s no longer about solitude, it’s about some guy giving his dog the daily walk, which isn’t at all the same feel to me.
Hi Richard,
I like the basic idea you were striving for with this scene and yes it does inspire solitude. The solitary figure works very nicely and I like his placement in the image behind the glistening sunlight on the water. No, I do not think the image is to dark. There are a couple of tweaks I would suggest. IMHO I would crop off some of the empty space on the right and left sides; that would also get rid of that foliage already mentioned by @Youssef_Ismail. That would place more of an emphasis on the man and the light streaming across the water. For my own personal tastes I am not a fan of the noise; although there are some photographers who like it; I just do not happen to be one of them. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. This is just my opinion of course. I almost forgot to mention that I also like that cresting wave out towards the horizon.
@Marylynne_Diggs@Youssef_Ismail, thank you for your very helpful feedback. @Ed_Lowe I liked what you did here, since my intention was to highlight the light from the sun with the man walking on the beach. Now that I look at the photo more closely, I do see quite a bit of grain so I might need to lessen that a bit. Thanks again!
