Song Sparrow Letting the World Know about its Territory

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Pointe Mouillee is a marsh complex that juts out into the Western side of Lake Erie and is known for its waterfowl diversity. White pelicans have colonized the area and manage to successfully raise their young. I missed many good pelican shots by being distracted with lots of small passerine birds. Song sparrows are common there and was able to get one in focus singing from a tall Phtagmites seed head. 30 mph wind gusts made the autofocus work for each shot. I really liked this image when I first saw it on my monitor–sharpness, detail, composition, and pose seemed to all come together to make an ideal comp.

Specific Feedback

What do you think? The soft lighting by overcast sky worked well for this shot.

It just doesn’t get much better than this Jim. You’ve got all of the pieces together for a great image here. The song is sweet! The perch is something different that you don’t see everyday. The BG is exceptional.

as you know, I like little birds. This is beautiful. Excellent composition. The grasses create a nice diagonal component. The bird is very sharp and the open beak singing is wonderful. I really enjoy the background. Nice job on this one.

Hi Jim, love the singing pose and the grass makes for a great perch. Nice BG too. Fine details on the bird. Well done.

I agree that you got a wonderful shot here, Jim, and the post processing looks excellent. With all that upward energy, I think a bit more room at the top and maybe a touch less on the right might be an interesting variation, but this is very good as posted.

Gorgeous!! I love the pose, perch, lighting and BG. A perfect example of a sharp and well-detailed image!

I think a little could be added to the top, but not a huge deal.

Thank you @Ed_Williams , @Allen_Sparks , @David_Schoen , @Dennis_Plank , and @Diane_Miller . I took about 60 images of this bird and most of the photos are similar in quality. But I felt this one stood out for some reason. I have a few where the sparrow is positioned farther from the top, but almost as good as this one…Jim

Well done! I love the gesture of the open beak, I can hear it singing! Lovely perch and overall framing and background control. Beautiful! If anthing, I might want a bit more room in upper right area as that is where the bird is ‘singing’ into. but not a deal breaker by any means!

Late to the game here!
Jim, not the tiniest nit from me. As close to a perfect shot as possible - great light, perfect singing pose, interesting perch, and very complimentary BG
Congrats on a fine EP! (awhile ago)
