Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

In Costa Rica last winter, I was fascinated by the patterns of palm fronds at one of the lodges with a dining deck that was level with the treetops. I posted a different version of this one in Abstract sometime back, but I think this crop that I did later works better.

Specific Feedback

A couple of things interest me here. Should I clean up all those little white spots? Should I take it all the way to solid saturated black and white to make it about nothing but the lines?

It’s obviously a leaf so the spots work for me, as does the inclusion of mid-tones, but this could also go more abstract. I love that the lines are parallel on the bottom and diverge subtly on the top.

Dennis, your treatment shows off the parallel nature of the lines well. The big curve of the center rib adds a good dynamic component. The more subtle smaller lines between the big ribs are a nice extra that wouldn’t be seen if you pushed the contrast more.
