Standing On The Edge

Image(s)

Image Description

This image is from a recent trip my brother and I made to Blackwater Falls SP in WV. We timed the trip for a rainy day and we were not disappointed as quite often on rainy days the mist and fog swirls in and out of Blackwater Canyon. It was a little nerve wracking capturing this image as we were standing on a rock outcropping a couple of feet from the edge of the canyon in wet slippery conditions during the rain. The things we do. The wind was blowing the rain into our faces and on the front of the lens element and we had to press the shutter and then wipe the lens after every capture. Unfortunately this file was a little soft as I did not do a good enough job of drying the rain from the front of the lens so Mike ran it through a program on his computer to sharpen it up a little.

Just wondering how the dehaze looks to everyone. I tried to find the sweet spot with the fog and trying to keep some details in the autumn foliage. Anything else you notice please feel free to mention it.

Ed: I thought this had to be from you or Mike just from the thumbnail. Glad you braved the conditions and despite the lens issues I think this turned out pretty well. Marvelous conditions and a very pleasing capture of the wonderful color palette :+1: :+1:>=))>

Ed, ist a very nice shot in challenging conditions. I understand the dilemma of dehaze to get good saturation versus keeping that “foggy feeling”.

I think you’ve done a good job, though I might have gone a little more towards foggy with some of the saturated foreground trees . On the other hand, its clearly patchy fog, so an argument can be made the other way. Its a tough choice.

Ed, this looks great as presented. It’s a fine mix of fog/cloud, fall colors and those rock pillars. For me those pillars add an extra element, as I feel like there’re a couple of robots standing there enjoying the view…

I find this image really stunning. The interplay of fog and mist weaving through the vibrant autumn colors and the rugged rocky outcrop creates a truly captivating scene. Nicely done and don’t take too many unnecessary risks! :worried:

It’s a beautiful shot, Ed. The fog keeps it from being just another pretty photo of fall colors. The composition is terrific.

I’d consider lowering the saturation a little in this area.

Ed, how did I guess this was yours!? Another gorgeous and peaceful composition, with a very nice mix of trees, color, fog and some rugged rocks. I love the blues offsetting the warm fall colors! And congratulations on a very well-deserved EP!

First off thanks for the WP; I am flattered. I would also like to thank everyone @Bill_Fach, @WillR, @Mark_Seaver, @Tom_Nevesely, @Don_Peters and @Diane_Miller for your thoughtful C&C on this image as it is always appreciated. It was one of those moments that I find very exhilarating watching it unfold as the fog swirled around the walls of Blackwater Canyon.

@Bill_Fach : Mike saved the day for me with sharpening program he has.
@WillR : I will play around with the dehaze a bit and see what I come up with.
@Mark_Seaver : The outcrop of rocks does appear to be enjoying the view; I know I sure did.
@Tom_Nevesely : I hear you on not taking too many unnecessary risks. I am not a big fan of heights so I was not getting any closer to the edge than I was.
@Don_Peters : Thanks for illustrating the area you were talking about. I will play around with it some.
@Diane_Miller : Thanks for the kind words.
