Stick Wars Have Begun

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This one was taken yesterday morning after the rain stopped. I do like high key photos so cloudy days will not stop me from taking photos. The heron rookery is heating up with courtship activity and active stick thievery. The RH heron was caught in the act and heron justice was being implemented. I liked the poses and the crisp features of this image. I left the BG as a light gray which keeps the BG from washing out the crisp outlines of the comp.

Specific Feedback

How do you like the composition? I chose this nest because of its position on the edge of the rookery. It also is nice to get this subject photographed before the cottonwood trees leaf out.

This is a gorgeous image, Jim. Very well balanced and the detail is wonderful. I also really like your processing on it. No nits on this one.

Looks pretty much perfect, Jim. Both herons are sharp and the interaction is well caught. High key works well to show the herons and nest.

Beautiful image, Jim. I like the composition and the behavior captured The subjects in the middle is works very nicely and provides a good balance standing on the nest. I like the way the one Heron seems to be stoically taking its scolding. Sharpness throughout is quite amazing. I would be tempted to remove the twig branches along the mid lower right side of the frame and remove the the snip of a twig the just barely showing at the scolding heron’s throat. But both are pretty insignificant in the overall enjoyment of the image. Nice selection for the nest shot as no background interferes with the activity. I also like the cloudy or overcast days for shooting, no harsh reflection s or shadows.

A gorgeous image indeed. The composition is good with plenty of breathing room all round to give the herons the centre of attention.

I’m enjoying the high key treatment and your excellent editing.

Perfect in every respect! And what a wonderful nest – hope you’ll be able to keep us posted on the action there!

Jim, this works great as a high-key behavior shot, nicely enhanced by the lack of leaves in the trees. The birds are framed well by the branches on both sides, with a bit of dynamism in the viewing from the angled trunks.

Terrific catch Jim. Love the interaction, sharpness on both birds, and high key look. You picked a great nest and made most of the opportunity.

A fine image, Jim, and you tripped the shutter at the right moment.

Cropping is a matter of taste but I’d consider cropping out some of the top and bottom so that the herons occupy more of the frame.

Wow Jim! I didn’t know about “stick thievery”. Love how you represented a piece of this bird life. It really is gorgeous with the high key background. I wouldn’t change a thing!!

JIm ..thats so beautiful…love the way you left the white sky as is…that really makes the difference in the sky ..

Really nice composition! Love the detail and the high key treatment. The 600mm is one of my favorite lenses! And congrats on the EP!

I had the same thought - a truly excellent image very well processed.Really excellent. I did wonder how it would look with a bit more cropping to give the birds a bit more attention. I think they would stand up well.

Great image. I agree that a little tighter cropping could work (especially the top area). I like the hint of color with their beaks, and the drama. Well done.

@Jim_Zablotny This is a really fine photograph. Everything is so good, timing, focus, composition, processing. My ultimate compliment is “I wish it were my photograph!” Thank you for posting it to inspire us.
