Still Shining

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Our white hibiscus is still happily blooming and with no nasty weather in sight it may keep it up for quite a bit longer. It’s the gift that keeps on giving. >=))>

Specific Feedback

Something I’ve counselled but don’t do often enough is use a polarizer for Flora shots. It takes the sheen off leaves but of course sucks up a lot of light causing slow SS. There was a gentle breeze pushing the flower around quite a bit so I used my machine gun approach and shot a number of bursts hoping one would miss out on the motion blur. I actually got quite a few keepers. In the past I’ve been reluctant to push the ISO but since getting DxO PureRaw I’m finding that a non-issue. Any experience with polarizers you’d like to share?

1/15 is pretty slow to get keepers, but it’s really not that long to get a flower to hold still, so it’s a good approach, Bill. I’ll have to confess that I rarely pull out a polarizer and don’t even have one to fit all my lenses. It would probably be a good idea to at least get one for everything I use for flowers and the rare landscape. f/22 worked very nicely for this flower with all the front end in nice crisp focus and just a bit of drop off on the back side. Another beautiful Hibiscus image.

Bill, this looks great with lots of detail in the flower set off well by the green leaves and those two nice looking buds. I’m going to guess that this was in the shade or the day was overcast, given your shooting parameters. I’m especially attracted to the subtle colors in the petal to the left and how sharply the pistil stands out. Yes, with current AI denoising, you lose very little detail with noise reduction so I find myself going to iso 3200 or 6400 regularly when I’m shooting low light abstracts. I agree that a polarizer is good for showing off detail in flowers and leaves.

What a gorgeous flower!! The detail is perfect and the BG nicely subdued. No suggestions, except give us more!!
