Composition and processing. To dark or flat?

Technical Details

Hey Mario. This is a great composition. The hint of fall color is tremendous. My only suggestion is to use the white balance picker and click on the dead tree just upper right of center. It will remove the color cast that I see. Definitely warms it up.

I like the overall comp very much.

Cheers,
David

Very interesting vertical composition to enhance the striking shapes of the trees! The group of yellow trees (Aspens?) is wonderful!I like @David_Bostock’s suggestion. I also wonder about less vignette on the sides and lowering the exposure on the water and its bank.

Mario,

A beautiful mountain and autumn scene, very nicely composed. For once I actually like a tall vertical as it’s quite appropriate for the scene you experienced.

As far as processing, I’m heading in David’s and Diane’s directions. In fact after his suggestion about the color cast, I decided to try his advice and so I pulled this in and made a few adjustments. The color cast is fairly blue and playing around with the WB came up with this version. I’m not convinced the WB is the best it could be, but it did need some adjusting.

The biggest thing that I can’t figure out is the darkness of the trees on the edges and most especially in the ULC. Those trees are so much darker, yet the light is diffused and I’m not sure why or how those trees are darker. And to that, and agree with Dian’s comment/suggestions, that the trees on the edge could be brought up quite a bit to be more in line with the rest of the trees. But I’m not sure if this was your intention or not. But here’s what I came up with.

  • did the WB trick David suggested
  • burned down the river/shoreline a little bit
  • dodged the trees right, left and UL even more.
  • but also selected a Darks Luminosity mask and increased the exposure on a Levels layer (they painted out that in the center area - exposure/luminosity just find in that area.)
  • tweak the yellow aspen a teanie bit, increase the yellow luminosity, which also dropped the saturation a tad. subtle change if anything.

I think this has great potential and even make a fine print. I do think some processing adjustments are needed though. Here’s a quick version:

A beautiful composition. I agree with others on the white balance, and I would burn the water a bit but sparing the bright spots with a LM

Thank yoou all @Lon_Overacker @David_Bostock @Diane_Miller @Richard_Duckworth for you time and comments. I have made some of the suggested adjustments
