Image Description

Another photo from my long summer road trip to Alaska. I woke up to this view while camping on the north slope of the Brooks Range… in mid-August!

That is quite a surprise in mid August. You emphasised a wintry feeling by this low contrast image. The mountain is really impressive, in particular since the summit is close to the top of the frame. Which also minimises the amount of white sky. There are only a few lines, but just enough to determine the shape of the mountain. The line of shrubs or herbs at the bottom adds depth. Would it be possible to get a bit more detail in the whitest parts of the mountain? (Perhaps too much snow or fog.) As a very minor comment, the three black patches, bottom left, catch my eye. Well done.

This trip was clearly amazing. I’m impressed by your adventurous spirit and hope do some of my own expeditions after retiring this during,

I love the Hugh key treatment here. It really communicates the cold and freshness without any hint of brutal cold, which is a challenge in this kind of light.

I do wish there were a rush more sky up top. Just enough more to give the mountain some head room and reveal the mono color quality,

@Igor_Hoveijn @Marylynne_Diggs Thanks for your comments.

Igor, I will experiment with adding a little more contrast. I did almost no editing to this image other than cropping, as I liked it pretty well out of the camera. I experimented with white balance but ended up with the original.

Marylynne, thanks, it was indeed a great trip and I cannot recommend retirement enough!! I look forward to hearing about your upcoming expeditions! I will try some different crops to see what it looks like with more sky. I always struggle with getting the framing right – too many choices and decisions. I had to work around some distractions that I cropped out of the lower part of the frame and lines on the sides of the mountain that detracted from the balance.

Wonderful!! I agree with more room on the top. I’ll be interested so see any alternate crops. but this one is quite lovely as is the high key presentation.

@Igor_Hoveijn @Marylynne_Diggs @Diane_Miller - Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I un-cropped a bit to give the mountain more head room. I also reduced the exposure a wee bit to recover some of the detail in the lightest parts of the mountain.

The RP is a very nice improvement!

Very nicely done! The additional headroom feels right and the added detail in the mountain is perfect—still airy and high key but a bit more more for the eyes to engage with.

Thanks Diane.

Thanks Marylynne. It’s so helpful to have other eyes on it. I was afraid to loose the high key feeling, but I do like the additional detail.

A lovely image of the Brooks range, Cathy. I think it works much better with the looser composition of the repost.

I like the repost. A bit more room at the top and some more detail while preserving low contrast.
