The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
This was the first photograph taken with my new Nikon Z8 and 24-120mm lens. It was a bit stressful trying to figure out the controls in the dark but I was pleased with the result.
Specific Feedback
I feel the centre of the image is a bit washed out and the highlight in the sky is not blown out but looks bright, what do you think?

This is a lovely image. The composition draws me in and allows me to explore the image. The highlights all seem a bit too bright, even if they aren’t blown out and parts of the foreground appear too low in contrast. The yellow in the sky feels a bit too saturated but I’ve seen nuclear sunsets with colors that defy reality and this could have been one of them. You could probably reduce the overall exposure by 1/2 to 3/4 stop and that would likely take care of the contrast and brightness. Definitely a location I’d shoot all the time if I were close enough to it. Beautiful.
It is indeed a beautiful scene and it looks like a magenta cast that I think suits it. The bright portion in the sky is a bit problematic. One solution is to place a radial gradient around it and then brighten it a bit. That is allow it to blend more naturally with its surrounds.
There looks as though with some cropping you could have a couple of different images within this frame. For instance I enjoy the LHS with the bright channel of water. That could work even if you eliminate the sky.
I got the Z8 last year and my first shot was of a cow next door so I think you win that one
This is such a positive, optimistic image. I love the message here. I’ve always felt so alive at such times and this image makes me feel that way. It’s the light of course. It starts from the sun and radiates outward towards everything. Everything glows from the radiating sunlight. And the composition provides wonderful depth and scale as things get smaller and smaller. I hadn’t noticed the blown out sunlight until you mentioned it but yes it would have been better with some detail in that area. It’s not a ‘deal breaker’ though. I don’t see any issues with the water so I don’t understand the worry about it.
I agree with @Igor_Doncov here. It’s a well-done image. I also agree with @Bret_Edge regarding reducing the exposure a tad; not a lot though, the sense of light is one of the things that make the image compelling.
Hi Colin,
First off congrats on the new Nikon Z8 and lens; always fun to have a new toy. This is a very inviting view for sure and looks like a great way to start off the day. The inlet of water does a wonderful job of drawing the viewer into the scene and I am loving the drama laden sky with those amazing clouds. I agree with @Bret_Edge and @Preston_Birdwell about lowering the exposure just a little. This image is well worth a small tweak as it is very nicely done.
This is a very beautiful photo. The composition is spot on. I am so glad the v shaped light colored sea is not in the center of the photo, but to the side! My vote on the highlights would be to very slightly darken the bright sky, and more forcefully darken the light colored v of ocean.
