Surviving the Mara

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The Mara River crossing presents not only the threat of swift currents but also the ever-present danger of crocodiles. These stealthy predators lie in wait beneath the surface, exploiting any moment of vulnerability. For the wildebeest, survival means not just enduring the river but escaping the jaws of these opportunistic hunters.

Specific Feedback

Any feedback welcome.

cool shot, like the black and white really works for this shot. also like the emotion you really get the sensation that they are scared and in a hurry and don’t even care about each other its everyone for themself. i’m not sure but would like to see what it looks like with a mask on the water and bring down the clarity and blurred just a little to put more focus and attention on the animals. Ether way its a really nice shot.

Thanks for the feedback Paul. I’ll give that mask a go. :+1:

You have certainly caught the motion and emotion of a Mara crossing, Don. If the canvas allows I would like to see a bit more room on the left hand side for them to move into. I think it would suggest a note of optimism or possible success in completing the crossing . Well done!

Thanks Sandy! I have to confess I did clone out two wayward wildebeest. Appreciate your feedback!

Thanks, Garnet. Funny you mention that crop—it was my first instinct as well! I chose this version because placing the group as close to the center as possible felt more in line with how their situation came across to me: uncertain and precarious. It’s a case of total commitment with no guaranteed outcome. I really appreciate the feedback! :+1:

I totally agree with your composition for the reason you just mentioned. A river crossing is a lot of drama and the little space the wildebeest are getting here, emphasizes to me the choking situation they are in. Nice one!

Thanks Ingrid, appreciate your feedback!
