Temple of the Sun

Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

While visiting Ecuador, we visitied the Inca Ruins in Ingapirca. It was a day of rain, fog, and the occasional spot of sunshine. I marveled at the construction, constructed with no motar. This is the most complete structure on the site; most of the area was striped of it’s building materials. There was also an ancient Inca road. What engineers the Inca were!

Interesting. My first reaction was how closely this resembled some of the stone structures in Machu Picchu, Peru.

I think this image has great potential. It just needs more processing. This could be made to look very dramatic by working on the tonality of the sky and the building itself. It would require some experimentation. But basically I would increase contrast as the image has a lot of mid tones and not enough good blacks and whites. I would work on this in 3 sections - the sky, the building, and everything else. I would probably make the building with its stones very contrasty. I would make the hills and the grass much darker so that the building pops out. I would make the sky much more contrasty by lower the darker tones to add drama.

It’s really a wonderful image in many ways. The building is fascinating. I particularly like its curvature and how that stone wall rises above it all. Even the stairs are great and the rock wall on the left. There’s a lot of atmosphere here as well. And I like those distant buildings on the far right. I wouldn’t clone then out. They give a sense of the environment.

Igor, I probably shoud have noted that there was fog in the image, therefore ,I intentially went for a soft image.

Fascinating subject you have captured here. Love the composition. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a photograph of this temple, and if I have it was not from this angle. The shape of the structure and your choice of camera angle make it appear very ship like. I appreciate the mood of the image you have captured with your processing. It creates a very introspective POV, an ancient temple shrouded in mystery looming out of the past. With more dynamic processing as suggested by @Igor_Doncov , you can switch the mood to an ancient vessel plowing through the tempest of time. I can see the image either way. Thanks for sharing.

I don’t know how I missed seeing this earlier, Gary. I really like the composition, though I think a slight crop on the top and the right to give the structure more dominance might be interesting. I also liked some of Igor’s ideas since the temple doesn’t seem to be fogged in. I took the liberty of downloading your image and playing with it a bit in LR. I increased the contrast and texture of the temple and foreground quite a bit, added some negative dehaze in the area to the right, and increased contrast in the sky to emphasize the cloud structure a bit more. The LR selection tools had a bit of trouble with the edges so there are some processing anomalies there that I was too lazy to clean up.

Probably this doesn’t match your vision of the image, so take it for what it’s worth.
