Description

On my Oregon coast trip I spent a full day at Shore Acres. I’ve been there many times in the past but never hiked the main trail north of the visitor area. The further I went the more interesting it became. This small scene arrested me. I find it at once amazing that the little tree can grow like this, especially considering how some of the storms in this section of the coast can be pretty powerful and then it almost looks like the big tree is reaching out to keep it from falling away.

Specific Feedback

I considered making some of the dead stuff near the bottom of the small tree go away, especially the branch extending back to the big trunk. Your thoughts?

Bill, an amazing feat of nature and I like how you have depicted it!

I’d leave the branch as I think it adds to the drama of the little tree clinging to terra firma. Based on my very limited experience using these “remove” tools, they have their place, but IMO should be used with descretion.

Cool shot!

The “dead stuff” doesn’t bother me at all, Bill, they add to the ruggedness of the scene. Beautiful capture.

Hi Bill,
That certainly is a precarious looking place for the tree! I am guessing some of it’s real estate has fallen away over the years and now it is stuck with the current state of affairs. I am always amazed with the tenacity of the natural world. For my tastes I would leave the branch and the dead stuff as I think that helps reinforce what you were going for. Nicely done.

Did you see the National Weather Service advisory for there for Christmas?

** WHAT…Dangerously large breaking waves of 30 to 35 ft.*
** WHERE…The beaches and shorelines of Curry, Coos, and Douglas counties.*
** WHEN…From 4 PM Wednesday to 4 PM PST Thursday.*

Wish I had the freedom to dash down there! It depends on timing and direction, but In my experience the waves get pretty good there when the summation of swell and wind waves are 20’ and above, so this could be good.

For me this is an image with a story, all about tenacity and hanging on. As such, I’d definitely keep the stuff at the bottom.

My wife doesn’t like to go to the coast in the winter because of the regularly bad weather. I want to go to the coast in the winter because of the regularly bad weather!

John, WE saw it! While we love the storms, we are in southern CA for a few days. Good thing we have lovely neighbors who watch the house when we are gone.

Bill, this certainly is aptly titled. I have no idea how this little tree survives in our storms and wind.
The roots add to the image, imo.
Nice work!
