The Catch

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Just a heron catching a fish … taken at a bit more of a distance than I would have liked

Specific Feedback

I’m specifically wondering where to crop this on the bottom. I would prefer to not have the ducks there, but is it too tight on the bottom if I crop them out? Is it level? Any other feedback appreciated.

Elizabeth, this is a great catch - for both of you! The ducks don’t bother me at all, and - yes - I think it would be way too tight if you cropped them out.
The heron is in wonderful light, in a sweet pose, and the prey is perfect between it’s beak. A polarizer would have helped quell the bright water, but it’s not too obtrusive (and I always forget to put the filter on).
That one round bright blob near the upper left could go, as well as the bright vertical stick on the upper right.
I always do “border patrol” also, to see what little light blips could be toned down- the one on the edge in the upper left, for instance.
A VERY nice image!!

Thank Sandy! I was going to submit this is the nature category of my local photography clubs monthly competition. The rules for the nature category don’t permit removing things, but I can crop them out. I adjusted the crop a little to lose the bright things you pointed out. Thoughts?

Hi Elizabeth, nice catch of the fish flip showing terrific feeding behavior. Given the busy surroundings, I like the choice of a close crop. The foreground ducks are a bit of a distraction to me but I do agree cropping them out would be too tight. Too bad the heron is angled slightly away from us. I like the rework taking out the miscellaneous bright elements.

Hi - That works, but the original comp is better-balanced.
Instead of cloning out, you can just darken the area a lot - or entirely into into oblivion.
This should be an excellent entry for your photo club!

Unfortunately darkening areas to hide something is not allowed either.

Ok… well… Your crop is the answer then!

Very nice catch!! The Heron is beautifully sharp and the crop worked well. The ducks blend into the environment well enough. Good luck with the competition!
