Heron Take Off

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Recently at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in BC Canada. The birds are very acclimated to humans. They allow feeding so there are ducks galore and you have to careful not to step on them. This Heron allowed me to get closer than usual and was able to get the photo just as he took off. It was the moment that I had wanted to capture that I hadn’t in the past.

Close is right, Charlie. You don’t usually see bird photos with a 70 mm focal length, even with a 2x crop factor. That short focal length gave you some awesome depth of field which really enhances this image in my opinion. I could see taking a touch off the bottom, but that may just be because I don’t see the 4/3 aspect ratio as often.

Charlie

Very nice to be able to get that close to a heron. Sounds like a rather messy reserve, though with all the ducks. But there are advantages. I agree with Dennis about cutting off a tiny bit at the bottom of the image just for the sake of removing a tiny bit of negative space. I think the image is fine and I have no other criticisms of it.

Thanks. I re cropped it to 14x11 so I can print it. Bird a little more centered but, less dead space.

Charlie: I don’t get over here too often but this caught my eye for its dynamism, the wing position and the overall comp and environment. Beautiful image certainly worth printing. >=))>
