Great Blue Heron Catching a Fish

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was lucky enough to catch this Great Blue Heron wading through shallow waters looking for fish, and fortunate to get a series of photos of he or she grabbing a fish from the water.

Specific Feedback

Both photos are cropped and a bit on the busy side, but I was looking for feedback on which photo you think is best. I think both have attributes and the second can probably benefit from a tighter crop, now that I look at it. I like the first more as it shows more “action.”

Richard: I like both photos but for different reasons. The top photo shows the bird the moment after the strike and catch, while the second photo shows the fish more clearly. The environment is busy, but that’s beyond our control as photographers.

Nice catch of the behavior, Richard. I’m wondering if the shadowed side of the heron was originally pretty dark as I’m seeing a fair amount of noise there and your camera settings shouldn’t produce noticeable noise. It’s not a very significant issue in this case, just curious. In the second image, I think you could crop about half of the area to the right of the heron off and maybe come down a bit from the top.

Hi Richard, nice action captures. I like the active pose in the first image with the wings up. Light seems harsh and overhead but you handled it pretty well. Agree with Dennis on the noise on the bird - minor but should be easy to minimize. I could also see cropping in on the right in the second image. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you everyone for your helpful feedback. These photos were taken in the late morning, hence the hard light. I will work on removing the noise a bit on the bird.
Thanks again!
