Description
I was walking with a friend in our small natural forest. We thought the wood anemones on the tree stump were simply wonderful and had a lot of fun photographing them.
This is a lovely flower in a very interesting setting, Kathrin. For my taste, more depth of field with such a relatively large stump might work better. I have a bit of trouble getting over all the out of focus stump to enjoy the flower. The flower itself is beautifully portrayed.
Kathrin: Oh I love this kind of stuff! Great use of the shallow DOF and a fine comp and capture. It’s wonderful how new life can spring from the old. Most excellent. >=))>

Thank you so much for your valuable assessment. It’s inspired me to go back into the woods this weekend and try again with a large depth of field. I posted one result. My personal feeling is that the image with the shallow depth of field is more emotional. It’s not so easy to take a really good picture with a large depth of field. But I’m sure that with practice and patience, you can achieve some very impressive results.
Kathrin, I like the new version largely because the stump, with all of it’s convolutions, is sharp throughout. The light on the Anemones does a good job of separating them from the stump. Two very different views of these small flowers, both of which have their own merit.
I see your issue with this, Kathrin. I do like the greater depth of field, but since you’re stuck with that very high contrast stump, it is going to distract from the flowers no mater what you do in terms of focus. I played with the large depth of field version by raising shadows, lowering highlights, and reducing texture in just the stump. It still seemed quite a distraction from the flowers, so I cropped to get rid of a large share of the stump and I like the effect more.
Kathrin: The large DOF works well also and I agree that the shallow shot does create a greater emotional response. I also like @Dennis_Plank revision.
