The Underworld

Image(s)

Image Description

I have always strived to capture the “unseen” in my photography, and this photo was a try at literally capturing the unseen - what is beneath the ground that we normally do not see. It was a little tricky in composing this with so many elements and textures that it took a few tries to get any kind of a composition. I like to think this was inspired by all the poems I read about the underworld as an Literature major in college!

Feedback Requests

Any feedback is welcomed and appreciated! I go back and forth about adding more contrast and more texture, but it seems with more texture, the image becomes a bit much. But on the other hand “The Underworld” as I imagine it is not exactly a calm, ordered place either, so that overwhelming detail may be OK.

Pertinent Technical Details

Again, took several shots to try to get any kind of a composition that made sense considering all the chaos this image portrays. There is really nothing too interesting about the technical details of the photo - take with a Sony mirrorless, full frame, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, 5.0 aperture, 28-70 kit lens.

Marianne, this looks great as presented. The contrast and your handling of the lighter tones gives the collection of roots a fine 3D feeling. I’m also enjoing the “jumbled” look and how that invites extended exploration.

Thank you Mark for the feedback! I really appreciate it!

I like the image as it is. It has a good rhythm. I also find it fascinating to see what is otherwise invisible.

The only change I tried was to cut it off a bit at the bottom to remove a shape that’s not pointing in the main direction.

Hi Kathrin - Thanks for the feedback! I hadn’t thought of cropping it like that, so it’s interesting to see that result! I generally don’t do too much editing beyond the basics - maybe I should play around a bit more!
