Triple Falls, Dupont State Forest, NC

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I’m from NC but had never been to this State Forest untli 2023. I hiked to this waterfall; I’m actually standing in the middle of it and to my left and behind me is the big drop, but I didn’t have time to climb down there. It’s a beautiful spot (they filmed a scene from the first Hunger Games here).

Specific Feedback

The color photo I processed here didn’t do much for me; I made a canvas print of it but it’s always seemed really flat and dark on my wall (that may be the print quality or lack thereof!).

This morning on a whim I tried it again in black and white and like this a lot better as it seems to bring out the texture in the rock and water, but I’m not sure if it feels very balanced. My eye jumps back and forth between the two sets of falls. But I do love black and white.

Technical Details

Fuji X-T3, 3s, f/13, ISO 200, 32mm, tripod.

Processed in Lightroom, converted to black and white, no noise reduction.

  • Vision and Purpose: @debbie_campbell, this speaks to me of the power and beauty of the falls.
  • Conceptual: I haven’t seen the color version, but B&W certainly works.
  • Emotional Impact and Mood: I am drawn to the scene and would like to be standing there with you. Well, maybe not in the water!
  • Composition: You express doubts about the composition. I find it leads my eye around the image. I have diagrammed how my eye moves around the image after noticing the two larger waterfalls. There is a lot of movement in the lines and my eye doesn’t leave the frame. It works for me.

@Barbara_Djordjevic @Sandy_Richards-Brown thank you! I think the right side is actually darker than it should be and that’s why the bottom falls looks too bright.
