Untitled #237 + the reveal

And the clumsily-renered HDR to show the context. My husband was holding a black card about 5 ft behind the door, shaking his head in the certainly that I have lost my last marble.

A little tonal tweaking in LR then more in PS, but only just enough to bring out pleasing tonalities. BG darkened somewhat. About a 50% crop.

Diane, this is a lovely something. I love the subtle colours and shapes. A map of contours, bays and eddies. Half the beauty of the image is not knowing what it is. I’ll hazard a guess. It looks like something that has escaped the frypan and onto the hot plate. It’s quite common in my kitchen. I know your love of rust, but doesn’t look rusty in parts.

My first thought was that it’s a gnarly amoeba. But I doubt that. It’s very interesting.

This is fantastic. I love that you can’t tell what it is. I think it’s either a satellite view of a storm surrounding small islands on an alien planet Or The bottom of a coffee cup. What ever it is it’s mesmerizing.

HAH!! Thanks, @glennie, @Don_Peters and @Todd_Higgins! Glennie, it could definitely be some of the collateral damage from my attempts at cooking – but isn’t. (But that gives me an idea to be on the lookout for future weeks.) Don, it does look like something I would have seen through a microscope in my science days – but isn’t. Todd, another likely scenario – could be, but it isn’t. But I do need to check the cup holder in my car…

Now I’m thinking something like thinly sliced agate…or something regurgitated from the back of my fridge.

Diane,

Wow, no clue! Before any comments,my initial reaction was a slice or cross section of a geode, some kind of rock, granite, marble… something. Then I’m thinking an exotic tile or countertop (can’t see that in your house though… ha ha.) Something under a microscope also crossed my mind.

You’ve added to the mystery by suspending this thing in a dark void.

Makes me want to just cruz around the house and yard for some other-worldly patterns.

Kudos for seeing this and recognizing the potential! Can’t wait to learn what it really is.

Very cool, Diane. My first guess would be pond scum (shot something similar a few weeks ago but it didn’t want to cooperate in processing). I love the tonality range and the way if almost fades into the black background.

Thanks, @Lon_Overacker and @Dennis_Plank! No wild countertop tile here – gaudy stuff makes my teeth hurt. I have tried for pond scum before but never got anything this exciting. Boat docks often offer good material. Elkhorn Slough, halfway down the CA coast, has especially disgusting opportunities.

And @glennie, not that, but that could be another target-rich environment!

Keep guessing and I’ll keep offering some hints. It measures an inch across.

Unusually intriguing. My guess is that it is the underside of a slug or a snail stuck to a piece of glass

I see it as a mineral. !!! I have seen some thin rocks or mineral to give this look. Really interest image. This image does catch my eye and wonder. Great tone and I love the grays in this image… It is probably an everyday thing we all see. Diane saw this and took the photo and now keeping us guessing. Very cool !!!

Thanks, @Youssef_Ismail and @Gill_Vanderlip! Some of you are getting close…

Oooh, very cool. I can usually figure out what something is, but this has me stumped! Building on the previous comments, especially since you said Youssef and Gill were getting close, I’m guessing a tiny “puddle” of water on a rock. I see air what look like air bubbles in water, plus bits of mineral poking through.

Thanks, @Bonnie_Lampley! Actually I didn’t say which ones were getting close… It is a relatively unusual view (due to location) of a common but often unnoticed object.

Nothing new is springing to mind, but I’m having fun seeing all the trapped images within the object. Flying penguins, a great skull, a lizard, teddy bears…all sorts of wonder.

The bottom of a coffee cup??
Bird poo??

Come on! Is it time to reveal the mystery?

OK, it’s past time! Here is a very clumsy HDR attempt to put it in context. It’s just about dead-center here. And my husband thinks I am completely nuts.

Uncle! Uncle! Uncle! (for those old enough to get…)

ok, dead-center you say? So I see oak trees, a deck railing and a potted succulent with hummingbird yard art… but that’s not exactly center… Oh wait, what’s that blob, cobweb…

So… that must mean that blob is on the glass? I was thinking there’s a screen door, but no.

It’s gotta be flying bird poo? But Glenys already mentioned.

Well, all I can say is that I’ll bet back in the day in your circle of girlfriends, you were the one who could always be counted on to keep a secret!

Looks like a smashed bug when I increase the size to 500%, but I have serious doubt about that.

I still like Glenys’ bird poo idea.
