The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
My wife does a daily walk around the perimeter of the property and she noticed this emerging mushroom this morning and told me about it when she got back. I took a camera and went out to see what I could do with it. I took a number of images in the landscape orientation to get the entire uplift of the duff and some with a portrait orientation to concentrate more on the subject.
Specific Feedback
Which orientation appeals more to you? Are there any significant distractions I missed? Anything else to improve either of the images?
Technical Details
Both images with Sony A7Rv, FE 70-200 f/4 macro. Horizontal at 109 mm, vertical at 98 mm, both handheld (lying on the ground with the camera supported by my hands and arms on the ground) at f/22, 1/20 sec, iso 5000. Preprocessing in DxO PureRaw 5, processing in LR & PS CC. I did some clean-up in the out of focus area at the top in both images to remove some distractions.
I like both but the preference is for the horizontal, I like the wider look at uplifted root system of the moss. Also think a wider angle, giving all four edges of the image more room would enhance the photo.
Thanks, @Stephen_Stanton I do wish I could have included more room around the subject in this one. Unfortunately the surroundings started getting very ugly top and bottom unless I used a more downward viewing angle and I really didn’t want to do that for this subject.
Dennis: Give me the landscape orientation for sure. I love all the surrounding stuff and think it gives much more context than the portrait. Thanks to your wife for the discovery and to you for a fine capture. >=))>
Dennis, I have to agree the landscape orientation because that more shows what is going on. I find it amazing in nature what some of the plant-life can do to survive. Who would think that a mushroom would push up the sod like that. Excellent find by your wife. Glad she saw it and remembered to tell you about it.
These kinds of shots are always tough to organize because of the way they mess up the forest floor. Maybe include the rest of the moss tuft at the top…on the landscape view, btw, which I prefer because of the sweep and arc of the moss on top of the cap.
