Odd mushroom

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

We had some rain a couple of weeks ago and it seemed like a good time to look for mushrooms. I never find any in picturesque settings, just ones popping up through leaf litter and sprouting grass. This one caught my eye, though, as I’ve never seen one quite like it. It was about 3-4" across and maybe 1-2" high.

Specific Feedback

All comments welcome!

Technical Details

Focus stack, minor global tonal tweaks in LR, then into Zerene. Slight crop.

Pretty neat find, Diane. I love the color palette of the oranges and browns. You did a fine job capturing the details in the mushroom.

Very cool .looking mushroom, Diane. It almost looks like a badly contorted chantrelle. I’ve seen some pretty contorted mushrooms, I think mostly due to stuff eating them as they’re emerging. I have a bunch of itty bitty ones coming up (among others) but I need to figure out how to shoot them with a mirror to get low enough-probably be gone before I can get to that project.

Thanks, @Shirley_Freeman and @Dennis_Plank! I wondered if it might be a Chantarelle when I saw it, but don’t know enough about mushrooms to trust any hunches. I’ve picked them in CO (with knowledgeable friends) and greatly enjoyed them with dinner, but they weren’t this contorted. I should have pinched off a bit and given it the sniff test – I’m sure I would remember the unique aroma. I’ve heard they are found around here. I’ll keep searching.

Diane: A terrific find indeed and a superb capture. I like how you managed the DOF with your stack leaving the leaves just enough OOF to complement and not compete. Really well done. :+1: :+1:>=))>

Pretty neat find. Not sure they are chanterelles…a bit late for them. I like the detail and the natural fall off. The way they are twisting and curling reminds me of how nudibranchs swim through the water. Graceful, yet a bit weird at the same time.

Thanks, @Bill_Fach and @Kris_Smith! Picture This thinks it is something in the Hydnaniaceae family. Bill, I didn’t think to add it, but I softened the leaves a bit by selecting the subject, inversing it, and using the Dust & Scratches filter.

Diane, this is a cool mushroom (and a fine find), with all of it’s twists and turns. It’s also well separated from the surrounding leaves.
