The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
The cap on this tiny mushroom (possibly a dried out hygrocybe) is less than 1cm across, and I noticed it had a little blemish, but I didn’t know it would reveal inner structure like this. Two little tubes or openings that remind me of a Dr. Seuss creature. Ah the tiny wonders in the world.
In a couple weeks I’m going to participate in a workshop on mushroom identification so maybe I can actually identify these little tubes. Probably for spore production or release, but who knows. Fungi is a mysterious kingdom.
Specific Feedback
Bah. I wish I’d taken the time to do a real focus bracketing session instead of just picking different focal points. Ugh. I still like it although it could have used a few more frames. What do you think? And yes, I goofed on my ISO - forgot to change it after shooting a spider on a flower that moved in the little breeze.
Lr for basic processing to improve the texture and reduce noise. Zerene for a 7 image stack with some retouching on the DMap TIFF. Then a biggish crop, horizontal flip and some masking to reduce the exposure on the log and improve the focus & texture on the cap.

Kris, I would sure be pleased with this find and shot if it were mine, especially considering how tiny it is. I’m surprised you even saw it! That’s great that you are taking a workshop on mushrooms. You are the Mushroom Lady!
This is a little beauty and the tubes are very interesting, Kris. I don’t see anything wrong with iso 640 and 1/200 for a scene like this, but then I’ve been primarily a bird photographer and almost never get down to 640, let alone below it. I could see another few frames in your stack to pick up the back of the cap and the stem, but it looks quite good as posted.
It’s supposed to be a wet week here, so our fungi should start popping. I’ve seen a few poking out lately.
What a fascinating mini-world!! Probably a spider home. Quite enough in focus to show the setting. Wonderful color and BG. Only one suggestion: Keep 'em coming!!
Kris: A great find indeed and kudos to getting down low for this POV. The color palette of the BG is pretty special as well. I’m very OK with the DOF. Kudos for a fine effort and result. >=))>
Oooh I hadn’t thought of it as a hidey hole for anything…maybe springtails, too. I often see them on fungus, but they are so tiny I only generally notice them in post processing.
