Visual Weight "Pairing"

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I’ve been increasingly drawn to using visual weight as my compositional tool of choice when deciding what to include in the image. On a recent trip to California’s Asilomar State Beach, I came across this small (intimate?) scene. At first I just zoomed in on the flower, with the face of the stone acting as a background. But then as I zoomed out, the more I liked the image where the whole stone was included in the scene. As I consciously kept track of what elements in the image my eyes were converging on, I realized they were spending relatively equal amounts of time between both the rock and the yellow flower. Their interaction metaphorically acted like a fine wine/equisite entree “pairing” - wihtout one dominating over the other. [Even though the number of pixels they used in the image were not equal.]

Specific Feedback

I’m curious! Are any of you also experiencing the same response when viewing this image. If not, what are you seeing (that I am not seeing)?

Hi Franz. That is a super cool idea balancing the large and heavy rocks with the small delicate flower. It also adds a lot of context to the image instead of just focusing on the flower. My eye is wandering over the frame and I think it is because there are a lot of similar colors and some of the stray vegetation. I wonder if darkening the background a tad might help. This is a really cool idea, I hope to see more of your photos!

Jay;

I agree with what you’re saying. I was on a day trip with family to the coast, and did not have a lot of time to “clean up / work the composition”. So it was more of a “reconnaisance snapshot” where the GPS location that my smart phone attaches to all my images was actually worth more than the image. For what it’s worth, I have a small pair of scissors that I carry around in my camera bag, and would have definitely given the border an aggressive butch/buzz haircut, had I been there without the rest of the family.

Glad you liked the “composition”.

Cheers,
Franz
