Western Bluebirds and Toyon Berries

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I liked this 10 second sequence of the Western Bluebirds selecting and grabbing their berries. I was using a tripod and sitting down on a picnic bench under a nice roofed shelter in a County park. They checked me out but determined that I was not enough of a threat to stop their picking. I did not see the third bird until I processed the images.

Specific Feedback

I was pleased and somewhat surprised that both birds, berries and many leaves were in acceptable focus at 5.6. I masked the brought down the intensity and softened the yellow area on the right side of the image to make it less annoying. Probably could have cropped the 4th image a bit more on the right side too.

Nice series, Stephen. I like the first best given the juxtaposition between the male and female and the male’s head peaking out (didn’t notice him right away). Nice display of the primary colors. The colors in the second seem a bit muted compared to the other three, though I like the berry in the bird’s mouth. I’d be tempted to remove the beak of the third bird in the third frame.

Looks like the male is doing all the picking in this series, Stephen. Was he offering any to the lady or is it still too early for that? A nice park to have around. I like all four of the images with a slight preference for the second. The male in the background is a cool surprise as I never noticed it in the smaller images.

Nice series Stephen. Fine catches of this feeding behavior. I especially like the second image with the berry in the mouth of the male.

Thanks for the comments and input, Allen.

I appreciate your comments, Dennis. There was no trade off of berries as I was watching, but the other finally got the idea and picked her own. I wasn’t sure if it was a female or a juvenile. I got a good sequence of that also.

I appreciate your comments, Allen. Thanks.
