Description
We’re been getting some rain here in CA and, when it rains, I like to try for some “birds in the rain” poses. Here’s an early morning shot I got of a set steller’s jay near our suet hanger.
Specific Feedback
Cropping? It is a little dark but it WAS dark and gloomy so I didn’t want to bring up the brightness too much in the name of authenticity.
Technical Details

Looks like the wind was blowing pretty well from the direction of the rain, Dave. It’s amazing how dry these birds can stay until they want to get wet.
Love this shot! Stellar’s Jays always remind me of being a kid in Colorado, so I’m slightly biased in my opinion. I love the branch it’s perched on and the sharpness of the subject itself. The lighting seems realistic. I wonder if it might improve the image to reduce the highlights on the top of the branch a bit. The dashed raindrops are slightly distracting, but once you know what it is, it makes sense.
Fabulous pose and character - jays in particular seem pretty stubborn and self-determined. Nice detail and I like the raindrops. We can stay inside in less than ideal weather, but not these guys. Unless that’s just a sprinkler! Crazy ISO - was it really so dim? I guess it must have been.
Nice catch Dave and I love this beauty on the curvy branch. Great to catch the water drops so well. I think I can tell the affect of the high ISO on the feather detail but this is still a nice capture and fine pose.
Thanks! We’re not getting the brunt of that atmospheric river stuff but are getting some rain and I hate to let that stop me from shooting so I’ve kinda grown fond of shooting subjects in it.
