Taken last Autumn whilst picking up windfall apples . One apple was attracting a lot of attention and light was strong and low - making some gorgeous light inside the apple and illuminating this wasp departing the scene.

Not a scene usually photographed - but the light and the detail I was able to record on wasp and apple amazed me at the time - it was an early shot with my 90mm macro, but without diffuser so light is a little harsh.
Have I over denoised/sharpened things?? Possibly I fear, iso was 5000 - I have better lights now. I suspect the flash wasn’t"t contributing much to the image.
A wonderful shot of the wasp and the apple itself has details that I’ve never seen in one, Huw. I’ll need to let some of ours decay this fall-if the deer don’t get to them first. I think the light worked out very well. I suspect the flash contributed a bit to the light on the face of the wasp, but it’s difficult to be sure. It might be just the slightest bit oversharpened for some, but in this case, I think the details warranted pushing it a bit.
It looks like it’s emerging from hell, but for the wasp it was heaven! I really like the drop on its head and the bit of apple on the thorax. The strong lighting and sharpening are fine to my eye, as the shot deserves this bold approach. Super as is.
Huw: I like everything about this. The apple looks like some house of horrors but it is clearly not that for the wasp. Your DOF management is excellent and I like all the sharp details in the wasp especially and some of the apple. Top notch shot. >=))>
Hi Huw. The sharpness looks on the yellowjacket wasp looks fine and the lighting is spot good as well. The hairs on the apple are very sharp and my eye was drawn to them. Its part of the scene, so I would leave them be. Nice shot…Jim
Huw, the details and colors in the wasp and it’s surroundings look great. Fascinating in that I don’t see anything here that looks like an Apple… The big “V” of surroundings frame the was well and add some extraa interest, make this more than “just a wasp” photo.
Glad you like it. The apple stem is in the LLC but most of the insides had been consumed, the apple was almost transparent in places - hence the nice light
Huw this is a fantastic image. The details are really good, and I don’t see it as over-sharpened. The light looks fine to me, particularly for this shot. You wouldn’t know it was an apple if you hadn’t pointed that out. It looks almost other worldly. Great work!
