Description
Argiope appensa, also referred to as the Hawaiian garden spider or banana spider, is an orb-weaving spider belonging to the family Araneidae.
These things are plentiful on Kona, and it can be difficult to walk through wooded areas without getting a face-full of webs and spiders.

The high SS was necessary since the spider was spinning the prey to wrap him up

Great catch, good DOF and details with a nice clean BG. Well done Sandy. I tried getting one of these wrap up actions a couple months ago with a swallowtail and I know how hard it is when they are twisting and turning on you.
Great shot Sandy. Spiders can be fun to shoot especially when they catch something in their web and go crazy to wrap it up. You have to use a fast speed to be able to catch it. Looks like you caught him just right so we could see him as well as what he was doing and so clearly. I like the composition. There is really nice detail on a close up look of him. He looks to be pretty big. I would almost want something in the BG or FG to compare his size with maybe. But that might take away from what you wanted. Still a great shot.
Great shot, Sandy, and I love the title too. He stands out nicely against the nice smooth BG. I am hoping I can post some macro shots here soon. I went to the Botanical Gardens with some friends today. It was cool enough to be outside for a change.
