Image Description
I don’t live near the coast, and don’t have opportunities to travel to the coast often. A couple years ago I went on a workshop with National Parks at Night to Monhegan Island, Maine. This is an image of the wrecked tugboat DT Sheridan. It was carrying a shipment of coal to Bangor, ME when it was run aground in dense fog.
Most of our time on Monhegan was spent in dense fog as well. This particular night cleared up for a while so we were able to photograph the night sky.

Julie, your photo feels both serene and haunting, telling a story about decay and beauty coexisting… To me, the composition is thoughtful, with the star trails creating a sense of movement contrasting with the rusting structure in the foreground. The warm lighting on the metal sets off the cool tones of the sky. The balance between the celestial and terrestrial elements draws my eye across the frame.

Julie,
It is an interesting photo. I find the star trails really hold the attention as your eye bounces back and forth from the shipwreck to the sky and then to the BG. I also find the small lights and the faint glow around then interesting features as well. You were on an island so I surmise that you were facing west towards the mainland, at least from the star trail patterns, north has to the be to the right, correct?

Thank you! I appreciate your thoughts!
Hi Youssef, thank you so much for your feedback! You are correct, the north star is out of frame to the right, so I was facing west-ish, the lights are probably on one of the peninsula on the mainland. I suppose it’s possible that it’s a lighthouse. And of course there’s haze on the horizon so any of those lights are bouncing around that layer of haze/fog. Thank you again!
Julie, with the star trails explicitly showing the lapse of time, they fit very well with the rusted hulk.

Thank you, Mark! Much appreciated!
Wonderful image!! I love the light on the shipwreck and rocks, and the star trails are a wonderful idea. The hint of the distant shore is a very nice touch – very well done!
